PI
Yu obtained his B.S. in Chemistry from Peking University in 2002, and his Ph.D. from Boston College in 2008 under the guidance of Prof. Marc L. Snapper and Prof. Amir H. Hoveyda. After that, he worked with Nobel laureate Prof. Richard R. Schrock at MIT as a postdoctoral associate. In 2011, Yu was awarded the prestigious NRF fellowship from singapore and joined Department of Chemistry at NUS as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July 2017 and to Full Professor in January 2024. His research program at NUS focuses on the discovery and development of efficient catalytic method to promote sustainable chemical synthesis as well as application to medicinal chemistry and material science.
Binmiao was born in Fujian province, China. He received his BS and PhD degrees from Lanzhou University in 2011 and 2016 under the guidance of Professor Yongqiang Tu. After that, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Zhihui Shao at Yunnan University. In September 2018, he joined our group as a visiting fellow and then a research fellow till December 2019. Since September 2020, he rejoined us as a senior research fellow. From fall 2021, Binmiao assumed duty as an Associate Professor at NUS-TJU Joint Institute in Fuzhou. In his spare time he enjoys reading, playing badminton and Chinese chess.
Research Fellows and Assistants
Lei was born in Henan Province, China. He received his doctoral degree from Peking University in 2021. Under the guidance of Prof. Fanyang Mo, he focused on electrochemical synthesis derived from carboxylic acids and catalytic singlemolecule reaction dynamics. After graduation, he moved to Prof. Xuefeng Guo’s group to continue research related to singlemolecule reactions. Since early 2023, he joined us as a research fellow. In his spare time, he enjoys playing badminton and climbing mountains.
Fangyuan grew up in Gansu Province, China. She received her BS and Master degrees from Wuhan University in 2014 and 2017, and her Ph.D. degree from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2022 under the guidance of Professor Xumu Zhang. After graduation, she continued her research at Prof. Xumu Zhang’s group as a visiting scholar. Since Mar 2023, she joined us as a research fellow. In her spare time, she enjoys music and videos.
Sun, Guoquan (joint with MJ KOH lab)
Guo-Quan was born and raised in Guangdong, China. He obtained his B.S. degree in Huazhong Agricultural University in 2014 and received his Master degree in Sun Yet-sen University in 2016. In 2017, he joined in Prof. Da-Gang Yu’s group to study the electrochemical carboxylation with CO2 and successfully received the doctoral degree in 2022. After graduation, he stayed in Prof. Yu’s group to work as the research assistant. Now, he joined us as the co-hired research fellow with Prof. Koh Ming-Joo. In his spare time, he likes hiking, badminton, and cooking.
Gongfeng was born in Shandong, China. He obtained his BS degree and MS degree from Tianjin University of Science & Technology and Jilin University respectively. From 2016 to 2018, he worked as a research assistant in Prof. Xumu Zhang's group in SUSTech. In August 2020, he joined our group to pursue his PhD under the support of TJU-NUS Joint Institute. From January 2024, he works as a Research Fellow in the group. In his spare time, He likes playing badminton and watching movies.
Yuanyuan grew up in Anhui Province, China. He received his BS from Inner Mongolia University in 2017. He then joined Prof. Li-Zhu Wu's group in Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, CAS to study photochemistry and received his PhD in 2022. From February 2023 to June 2024, Yuanyuan worked in Prof. Lutz Ackermann's group at Georg August University of Göttingen as a postdoc and focused on photoelectrocatalysis. Since July 2024, he joined us as a research fellow. In his spare time, he enjoys basketball, football and fishing.
Huanlin was born in Shandong province, China. She obtained her bachelor degree from Ocean University of China in 2017. She then went to Japan to pursue further study in organic chemisty. In 2020, She received her master degree in Kobe University. In August 2020, she joined our group to pursue her PhD degree under the support of TJU-NUS Fuzhou Joint institute.
Graduate Students
Fourth Year
Yaming was born and raised in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. In 2019, he participated in the 3+2 Program of Soochow University to finish his undergraduate Honors Project and his MSc studies in our group. From August 2021, he started to pursue his PhD degree under the support of TJU-NUS Joint Institute. In his spare time, he likes jogging and watching movies.
Rachel was born and raised in Hong Kong. She received her B.Sc and MPhil in chemistry from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2018 and in 2020. In August 2021, she joined NUS to pursue her PhD with the support of the prestigious ISEP scholarship, and works as a joint student with Prof. Wu Jie's group. Outside of Chemistry, Rachel enjoys jigsaw puzzles, cantopop songs and coffee.
Lin was born in Nantong, Jiangsu province and raised in Chongqing. She got her B.Sc. degree from Nankai University in 2020. Then she worked as a research assistant in Prof. Guo Dongsheng's group at Nankai University. In August 2021, she joined our group to pursue her Ph.D. under the support of TJU-NUS Joint Institute. In her spare time, she likes DIY and watching videos.
Luoyu was born in Jiangsu province and obtained his BS and MS in Chemistry under the 3+2 Soochow university and NUS program while carrying out research work in our group. From August 2021, he started to pursue his PhD degree under the support of TJU-NUS Joint Institute. In his spare time, he enjoys playing football, going to gym and swimming.
Third Year
Guorong was born and raised in Singapore. He joined the group in Jan 2021 for his UROPS project and continued with his Final Year Project. After obtaining his BS degree with First Class Honors in July 2022, he rejoined us to pursue his PhD degree with the support of the prestigious PGF scholarship. In his spare time, he likes to play video games and read comics.
Peng was born in Beijing, China. He obtained his BS degree from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2019 and his Master’s degree from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry in 2022 under the supervision of Professor Ang Li. In August 2022, he joined our group to pursue Ph.D. in NUS under the support of TJU-NUS Fuzhou Joint Institute. In his spare time, he enjoys playing badminton, football and swimming.
ong Xu was born and raised in Singapore. He joined our group for his UROPS project in January 2021 and stayed for his Final Year Project. He obtained his BS degree with First Class Honors in July 2022, and continued in our group to pursue his PhD degree. In his spare time, he enjoys playing games, reading and looking for good food in Singapore.
Siliang was born in Hubei province, mainland China. Under the guidance of Professor Wang Xisheng, he received his BS degree in 2017 from University of Science and Technology of China. He received his MS degree in 2022 in Professor Su Weiping's group at Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter. At the beginning of 2023, he joined our group under the support of TJU-NUS scholarship. He is an amateur class Chess and GO player, and a fan of vehicle track racing.
Tiaozhen was born in Gansu province, China. She obtained her BS degree and MS degree from Tianjin Medical University and HIT-SUSTech joint training program, respectively. From 2020 to 2022, she worked as a research assistant in Prof. Xumu Zhang’s group in SUSTech. In January 2023, she joined our group to pursue her PhD under the support of TJU-NUS Joint Institute. In her spare time, she enjoys badminton and watching videos.
Second Year
Haruka was born in Tokyo, Japan. In 2023, she received her BS degree from Osaka University, where she carried out undergraduate research in the laboratory of Prof Ryo Shintani. From August 2023 she joined our group to pursue her PhD under the support of Faculty of Science Dean's Graduate Fellowship. In her spare time she enjoys cooking and travelling.
Kexin was born and raised in Wuhan, Hubei province. She got her B.Sc. Degree in Analytical and Testing Science from Hong Kong Baptist University, where she carried out undergraduate research in the laboratory of Prof Wang Jun. In August 2023, she joined our group to pursue her Ph.D. under the support of TJU-NUS Joint Institute. In her spare time, she likes music and creative writing.
Ziwei was born in Changchun, Jilin Province, Northeast China. He received his bachelor's degree from Northeast Forestry University. From summer 2022, he pursued his MSc studies in NUS, and rejoined our group in 2023 to continue his PhD studies and research. His hobbies are traveling and watching movies, abandoning his irresistible appetite for food.
WANG Xiyan, born in Henan province, China, obtained her BSc degree from Wuhan University in 2022 and her MSc degree from NUS in 2023. In August 2023, she joined our group to pursue her PhD degree. In her spare time, Xiyan enjoys cycling, running, singing and photographing.
Yifan was born in Xinyu, Jiangxi, China. He obtained his BS from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 2023 with the guidance of Prof. Wenjun Lu and Prof. Guoqiang Yang. In January 2024, he joined our group to pursue his PhD under the support of the President Graduate Fellowship (PGF). During leisure time, He is fond of Magic Cube, Ping-Pong, and Swimming.
First Year
Benjamin Yep was born and raised in Singapore. He obtained his BS with Honors from NUS in 2024 and worked in our group for his Final Year Project. In August 2024, he rejoined us to pursue his PhD degree. In his spare time, he enjoys bouldering or doing wildlife photography.
Mingjin was born in Baoding, Hebei Province, China. She obtained her B.Sc. in Chemistry at Peking University in 2021 and joined our group as a Master's student in August 2023. Since August 2024, she continued at NUS to pursue her PhD degree. In her spare time, she likes video games and novels.
YEH CHIA HUI was born in Taiwan, China. She received her bachelor's degree from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2023. In September 2023, she joined NUS for her MSc degree and joined our group. From January 2025, she continued to pursue her PhD in our lab at NUS. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, singing, and dancing.
Thien was born in Hue City, Vietnam. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ho Chi Minh City International University – Vietnam National University in 2024. In January 2025, he began his PhD journey at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with the support of the NUS-SINGA scholarship. In his spare time, Thien enjoys listening to music, playing instruments, and singing.

Yan Xu was born in Gansu province, China. He received his Master degree from Hunan Normal University in 2013 under the guidance of Professor Youlin Zeng and Professor Qian Cai, and his PhD degree from Lanzhou University in 2021 under the guidance of Professor Chun-An Fan. After that, he has worked as a lecturer at Tianshui Normal University. In July 2023, he joined Professor Panlin Shao’s lab at Guangzhou Medical University as a postdoctoral researcher, and came to our group as a visiting fellow in September 2023.
